Today’s thoughts are about reading. I love to read, and I enjoy exploring all different genres. As I walked this morning and listened to the podcast Windowsill Chats, I was introduced to the idea of Restorative Reading. There are many restorative practices out there right now, and I even teach restorative yoga, but I had never linked the concepts of restoration and reading together. It turns out I have probably been engaged in this practice for a long time.
My thoughts on Restorative Reading embrace the need to slow down and allow myself to retreat. For me, this reading retreat involves escaping into fiction, learning something new about the world and, in turn, about myself, or finding wisdom and grace in soulful, insightful books. The interviewee, Stefanie Affinito, referred to a “Book Apothecary,” those books that restore you and that you visit over and over again. I realized I have one! In a basket next to my bed are books that I pick up when I feel the need. That need can arise from feeling anxious, inspired, in need of inspiration, in need of comfort and familiarity, or often just needing something to read that will put me to sleep.
The picture above shows just a handful of my Book Apothecary. Each book is well-loved, each is precious, and each contributes to my state of being and my ability to live slowly. It is a very good thing!
