Today is Day 2 of my observing and writing project. The image above is of a very small, dry little bush I found on our morning walk. As I walked, I noticed how the sun was hitting it, turning it into a beautiful little bunch of loveliness. It reminded me of the fairy tale Rumpelstiltskin, in which the little old man spins gold from straw. This straw-like bush shines like gold.
As I continued walking, I passed several places along the path with these little golden bundles, which made me pause and reflect on how precious our simple daily activities are. The gold that appears to be spun in this plant is not necessarily a precious metal. The beauty and joy lie in the simplicity of this humble bush, reflecting the sunlight, and in the tenacious ruggedness of its ability to grow and glow in the desert sun and sand. Every day, each of us accomplishes small tasks that, if you were to shine a light on them, would reveal themselves as necessary, joyful, and precious. The saying “All that glitters is not gold” aptly describes my perception of what I found this morning. What I found made me smile.
